Do I need a special frame for double-sided posters?

A double-sided movie poster can be displayed in the same type of frame as a single-side movie poster. People who collect movie posters often prefer double-sided movie posters, but not all movie posters are printed double-sided. For the person whose only interest is in having a nice piece of artwork to display in their home, home theater, or office, there is no reason to prefer one over the other. In a frame made of aluminum molding, acrylic glass and foam core board for backing, the difference will not be perceptible.

Double-Sided Posters and Poster Display Cases

Double-sided posters are printed for use in theaters which have rear illuminated poster display cases or light boxes. Theaters display posters for a limited time in illuminated cases. (A poster may only be in a light box for a week or two and then taken out to make room for another poster.) Studios print posters primarily as disposable advertising products. If a poster fades, wrinkles or warps as the result of being in a light box or from exposure to the sun when displayed in exterior display cases, it can be thrown away and a new one put up.

Before displaying posters for long periods of time in a rear illuminated display case, I would contact the manufacturer and ask for the case's technical specifications regarding the amount of heat and UV light it generates. If the manufacturer could not provide that information, as a rule of thumb then, I would avoid illuminating a poster for long periods of time by turning on the lamps only when actively viewing the poster. Constant or prolonged exposure to heat and light may cause a poster to warp, wrinkle and/or fade.

If a poster becomes wrinkled, warped and/or faded due to excessive exposure to heat and UV light generated by a light box, it might be difficult to find a replacement. If an original double-sided poster of The Matrix is damaged, for example, it might be extremely difficult and/or costly to find a replacement.
