Movie Poster Reprints
Movie poster reprints are movie posters that
has been printed again but are often indistinguishable
in appearance from original posters.
Reprints are an Inexpensive Alternative
For those who are not collectors but would like to decorate
their homes or home theaters with movie posters, reprints are
an alternative to expensive original
posters. Reprinted posters are not folded
and do not suffer from wear and tear
associated with the display of a poster in a theater at the time
of a film's release.
Reprints are not Studio Reissued posters
Reprinted
posters are not studio reissued movie posters, but are
printed by publishers who obtain a license or authorization from
a studio to reprint a poster for a particular film. If a movie
is released again in theaters new posters will be printed by
the studio. Re-release posters are not reprints of original movie
posters but are original movie posters in their own right, often
featuring new artwork. Due to popularity of some films some original
re-release posters are reprinted. The movie poster (on the right)
for the 1998 re-release of The Wizard of Oz is an example.
Few Movie Posters are Actually Reprinted
Original movie posters are not printed on demand. Studios
print posters for the original advertising campaign for a film
and that's all that will ever be available. Compared to the enormous
number of movies that have been made in the past 100 years, due
to the high cost of printing and licensing fees, only the posters
for the most popular classic, contemporary classic and contemporary
movies are reprinted or reproduced.
A movie poster for a popular contemporary movie may be reprinted
for a couple of years, especially after the initial release of
the film, but later on, if the demand for the poster decreases,
it is no longer printed.
How Big are Reprinted Posters?
Reprinted movie posters can be one to two inches to only a
fraction of inch larger or smaller than original posters but
some may be the same size. To the casual observer they will appear
to be be the same size as original posters. Any difference in
size will not be apparent unless a poster is measured with a
ruler and compared to an original poster.
22 x 34 Inch Commercial Prints
For a few very popular movies (for example, Star Wars: Episodes
I and II, Spider-Man, Tombraider 1 and 2, The Hulk, X-Men 1 and
2, Charlie's Angels Full Throttle, Finding Nemo) 22 x 34 inch
commercial prints can be found in large discount stores. Some
of the posters may be labeled as one-sheets, but technically
they are not one-sheet
movie posters, but only small prints of the 27 x 40
inch one-sheet movie poster.
Even though some people prefer to buy these posters because
they are inexpensive and easier to frame than full sized movie
posters, they may be printed on paper lighter in weight (11 to
12 milligrams per square centimenter) than the paper on which
one-sheets are printed (14 to 16 milligrams per square centimenter)
and show light creases throughout the poster because they are
machine rolled very tightly to 1 inch in diameter and shrink
wrapped in plastic to easily fit in self-service poster bins.
